Cheyenne Kindergarten Students Really 'Dig' The Power Of Trees
By Sharon Fain, External Affairs Manager

Thursday, September 1, kindergarten students from the Montessori School of Cheyenne joined Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power and City of Cheyenne Urban Forestry employees to plant trees in Lions Park. The six trees will replace trees lost due to damage by the Mountain Pine Beetle.

Fourteen Cheyenne Light employees were on hand to help students learn more about trees and the importance they have to our community. Cheyenne Director of Urban Forestry, Lisa Olson also provided a quick education about trees and urged the children to return to the park and tell others about the 'Power of Trees'.

The 'Power of Trees' program matches Cheyenne Light with community partners to plant trees in parks, on school grounds, new public spaces and other areas where the trees will serve to benefit the environment as well as beautify the area. In 2012, Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power will continue to plant trees in Lions Park as part of a remediation program replacing trees removed to improve commercial flight service in Cheyenne. Next year, the Power of Trees team will plant trees in south Cheyenne at the new Romero Park.

Volunteers Weatherized Twelve Homes During September 11th Weekend

Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power, AARP Wyoming, and Habitat for Humanity of Laramie County weatherize homes and inspire community members to give back during the National Day of Service & Remembrance Weekend.

More than 200 community volunteers joined forces with Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power, AARP Wyoming and Habitat for Humanity of Laramie County to weatherize a group of homes in the 800 block of West 25th Street in Cheyenne on Sept. 10. In addition to weatherizing homes, volunteers also equipped homes with safety upgrades such as fire extinguishers and carbon monoxide detectors. Volunteers also beautified the neighborhood by planting flowers, shrubs and trees that were donated locally by Grant Farms. As a result of these efforts, community members invested more than 600 hours of volunteer service. Volunteers and organizations involved in this year's event included AmeriCorps VISTA, American National Bank, Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne, Cheyenne Board of Realtors, City of Cheyenne, Cheyenne Fire Department, COMEA House, Corporation for National & Community Service, FE Warren Air Force Base, Grant Farms, Indian Hills Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Kohl's, Laramie County Community College, Second Baptist Church, ServeWyoming, Texas Roadhouse and the Wyoming Energy Council.

For more information about the benefits of weatherization, community members are encouraged to attend a free event at Little America from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct 21. A wide range of vendors will be on hand to educate attendees about weatherization as well as ways to begin incorporating energy-efficiency technologies into their everyday lives.
