Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power
Advanced Metering Infrastructure

What is AMI? Advanced infrastructure is defined as systems that measure, collect and analyze energy usage through various communication media on request or on a pre-defined schedule.

Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power installed approximately 38,500 AMI smart meters beginning in June 2010 with project completion in January 2011.

Cheyenne Light received approximately $5 million in matching funds as part of the Department of Energy’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for the installation of AMI smart meters and communications infrastructure. This project was projected to cost Cheyenne Light $10M to bring this technology to its electric customers in Cheyenne, WY.

Project Benefits Post-installation:

The meters are working at an operational optimum providing two way wireless communications with the Company. The meters are successfully collecting and retaining accurate electric usage. The need to access customer’s property has been significantly reduced. The usage data collected will provide for accurate load research which will enable Cheyenne Light to position itself to prepare for future growth in our community and make proactive decisions to meet energy needs for our customers today in to the future.
